Keep the brie rind or slice it off?

People will do it different ways and some love the rind, some don’t. If it’s your first time, perhaps trim the rinds on the sides/ends so you can taste more of the brie. The rind will still remain on the top and taste that too. From there you can know if you like the rind or not. If you do decide to slice the edges of the rind off, know that the brie will ooze out more on the sides.

What type of Brie to use?

Sure, there’s different type of brie to make this dip. From double cream to more creamy Triple Cream bries, all will work great. But we wouldn’t use any super expensive high end brie. A grocery store brie is great and so much flavor will be from adding garlic butter. Save the high end fancy brie cheeses for your cheese board and eat it fresh. Here’s a great brie 101 guide.

How to Make Baked Brie Dip:

  • Score the top of the brie in cross-hatch style
  • Combine melted butter and fresh minced garlic. Use fresh garlic, it tastes so much better. The jarred chopped garlic has additives and funky preservatives in it and it’s a totally different flavor.
  • We love making it fresh. Add some fresh or dried herbs
  • Bake! Arrange on a platter with bread, crackers and fruit.
  • All bake brie recipe details are in the recipe box below with detailed photos.

Make Ahead Brie Dip Recipe

You can make this baked brie dip recipe ahead by prepping the complete recipe but without baking it. Then when you’re ready to serve, take the brie casserole dish out to room temperature. Don’t put the cold brie and vessel into the oven when the oven is hot. Let the cheese and dish to come to room temp. Then Pre-heat the oven, then once the brie has come to room temperature, bake it then serve. It’s easy peasy when you make this ahead of time and just bake before serving! Hot Brie dip! Let it cool but not too long. It’ll get hard.

It’ll be hard to not dive into the dip right away but it does need to cool a bit. But if you wait too long, the dip will get hard when it cools down all the way. So for those who want it creamy, runny and hot you have to eat it sooner than later. And for the late comers to the party, they can just eat it cold. It’s still got lots of flavor even when cold.

Can this be cooked in the microwave? My turkey will be cooking

    • Diane Reply

Hi Pam, we have not tried it in the microwave yet but we don’t see why it wouldn’t work. We would trim some of the wax edges off the brie first, then maybe cut the brie cheese in chunks. This could help melt the brie better in the microwave. Hope this helps!

FAQs

Do you leave the rind on brie cheese when baking? ›

Do you take the rind off before baking? Keep the rind on, as it will help the cheese hold its shape so it doesn't all melt out. The rind is also edible, so you can enjoy it with the melted cheese, or simply remove the top layer after baking and dunk in crusty bread like a fondue.

Do you need to cover brie when baking? ›

Place your brie onto a baking sheet and cover it loosely with aluminum foil. Transfer the baking sheet into a preheated oven set to 350°F (177°C). Let it bake for 5 to 10 minutes, or until warm.

Why is my baked brie rubbery? ›

Just know that without the rind, it will likely spread more because there's nothing holding it together. Why is my baked brie rubbery? This can be two things. If you left the rind of the cheese on, the baked brie may seem like it is rubbery once heated, or the brie was overcooked by leaving it in the oven too long.

Does the cheese skin stay on when serving baked brie? ›

In this baked brie recipe, I do not remove the rind because I need the surface to spread my jam and to add my beautiful nuts and toppings. The rind keeps the wheel of cheese together, and once you take it out of the oven and slice into it, all the gooey deliciousness oozes out like a nice surprise!

Why does my brie rind taste like ammonia? ›

It may be a turnoff but it's a consequence of aging, especially for bloomy-rind cheeses like Brie. As these cheeses ripen, their surface molds break down protein into amino acids and one byproduct of that breakdown is ammonia. When a Brie is aging at the creamery on a rack, the ammonia is evacuated through ventilation.

How do you make brie taste better? ›

What does brie cheese go well with? Seriously so much. You can pair it with something sweet like honey, jam, or berries, or you can go more savory with nuts, veggies, or red pepper jelly.

Which jam goes with brie? ›

Brie cheese is the perfect partner to jam! It pairs beautifully with jam varieties, such as: fig, apricot, blackberry, boysenberry or cherry jam.

How do you know when baked brie is done? ›

Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F (all oven types). Oven: Bake for 15 to 20 minutes (for 250g/80z), or until melted through. For 500g/1lb brie, increase to 25 minutes. To check, gently touch the centre of the brie – it should feel very soft, like it is about to collapse if you press any harder.

What pairs well with brie? ›

As mentioned, brie's mild, yet buttery and nutty flavor pairs well with so many things. Some examples are salami, prosciutto, pickles, apricots, apples, pears, dates, almonds, candied walnuts, and pecans.

Why does my brie rind taste like mushroom? ›

As Brie cheese ages, it develops a stronger flavor and becomes more complex, with earthy and nutty undertones. The rind of Brie has a slightly tangy and mushroom-like flavor that adds to the overall taste experience.

Can I eat out of date brie? ›

Soft cheeses such as Brie and Camembert have a shorter shelf life. Unopened, they typically last for a few weeks to a couple of months past their 'best by' date when refrigerated.

What type of brie is best for baking? ›

Normande cows are a hearty breed whose rich milk is perfect for butter and cheese production. The high-fat content lends buttery, cream of mushroom soup notes, making Le Pommier a prime cheese for baking. If you're feeling extra, follow this recipe and wrap your brie in puff pastry.

Is brie good for your gut? ›

Based on some studies, there are many health benefits of eating brie cheese. According to some studies, it might reduce inflammation and improve immunity. It might also aid in digestion if had in moderation.

Can dogs have brie? ›

Cheeses that have herbs, garlic, raisins, or other added flavors should also be avoided. Garlic and raisins are some of the most toxic foods for dogs and can cause serious health issues. Goat cheese, brie, and feta all have high levels of saturated fat, which make them unhealthy for dogs to consume.

Can you eat brie raw? ›

You're welcome to serve your Brie straight out of the refrigerator. But experts maintain that Brie's flavors, aromas, and texture are at their best when allowed to come to, at least, room temperature before serving. In terms of planning ahead, you should be aware that this could take up to an hour or more.

Should you cut the rind off brie before baking in puff pastry? ›

The Brie's rind is edible and will be a bit softer after baking. If you cut off the rind, the cheese could leak through the puff pastry during baking.

Can you melt the rind on Brie? ›

The long answer is when cooking brie cheese recipes, the cheese will melt but the rind won't. The rind will break down a little bit, but it won't evaporate into thin air.

Why does my brie taste weird? ›

Why does my brie taste like ammonia? There's a huge possibility that your brie cheese has already spoiled. Check the printed date on the package and look for signs of discoloration on the rind, such as blue or green mold. Brie cheese can go bad after 7 days since it's a soft cheese.
